Sherman Green News
Green Tip
Fill up your fridge and freezer – they are more efficient when full (just not so full that cold air can't circulate). And in a power outage, they'll hold the temp for twice as long as if they were half full. (Not that we ever have to worry about power outages around here. :-))
Recycling News
Sherman has teamed up with CURE Recycling to recycle cell phones, smart phones, inkjet cartridges, iPods and digital cameras. The PTA will get $ for each item recycled, while also benefiting CURE Childhood Cancer and helping the environment. These items will be collected throughout the school year. For more information see the attached flyer. The following items are being collected for fun and innovative art projects: CDs, cereal boxes (fronts only), and circular cheese containers. Please place them in the collection box just inside the Fern Street entrance. Thank you. Contact Courtney at bradandcourt@hotmail.com with any questions.
Important Email Advisory from the Webmaster
My name is Ken Lee and I am the Sherman PTA Webmaster. I am always hearing reports from Sherman parents who have received "phishing" emails from various sources, including ones that appear to be from other Sherman parents or friends. A "phishing" email is one which tries to get the recipient to either open an attachment or click on a url. The intent of the email is to install malware or a virus on your PC. It is especially important these days to verify that you "Look before you click!"
While it is not always the case, the vast majority of infections are the result of a user action: opening an email, clicking on a link in an email, opening an email attachment, or browsing to a site that has a compromised web page. In many cases hackers infect sites they know are frequented by young people, like game sites or social networking sites or high traffic sites like the Super Bowl site.
A few simple precautions can minimize your exposure. Do not open emails from people you do not know, open attachments unless you are expecting them, or click on links in emails regardless of what you may see. The link you see in an email is not necessarily the link that is configured "invisibly" behind the scenes. Should you receive an email appearing to be from a friend or acquaintance with an attachment or link that you are not expecting, take a moment to email them back to verify that it is actually from them. One tactic that hackers use if they are able to infect a machine is to download that user's contact list and then target those users, so be aware that an email from "Joe" or "Mary" may not be from them at all! Above all, "Just Say No". If you follow these simple guidelines you can avoid the vast majority of potential traps.
Sincerely,
Ken Lee
