CONNECTICUT AUDUBON NATURE EXPLORERS PROGRAM (CANE)
You are invited to join the Connecticut Audubon Nature Explorers (CANE) program for Fairfield children in kindergarten through second grade. With simple training workshops and low time commitment, you can share the excitement of the abundant wildlife in our woodlands and the Long Island Sound and marshes with your child in his or her class.
CANE is a science enrichment program that enhances the science curriculum in Fairfield Public Schools for K-2, but it is completely parent-driven and taught. The CANE lessons are designed by the Audubon so that anyone can do the presentations. Don't think "I can't do it; I'm not a science person or a teacher". Yes, you can! The lessons are FUN and fool-proof. Carol Kratzman at the Audubon designs the lessons and reviews them during your training workshop with helpful hints and what works best after years of heading this program. CANE is a fun and easy way to work in your child's classroom and I encourage you to become involved and help teach. I promise you will learn as much about our local wildlife and their habitats and the Long Island Sound's sea creatures and environment as your child does!
Your commitment is about 9-10 hours for the school year, which breaks down into three 1 ½ hour training sessions (1 each fall, winter and spring) and the corresponding 30-45 minute classroom lessons. The spring lesson for first and second grade even include field trips to locales like the Birdcraft Museum and Southport Beach.
The Audubon staff assembles all the training materials and supplies us with all teaching materials, including puppet theaters for some lessons, which the kids love!! After many years of teaching CANE, I can assure you that you will have fun and be rewarded that you are helping your kids learn about the world around them.
