Great idea for a family day trip
Attached you will find a “master plan” for a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tour includes many of the pieces discussed in our Art in the Classroom series. It is our hope that many of you will take a day to visit the Met and take the tour. There are many other fascinating areas to view, such as Arms and Armour, the gift shop, the roof top view and café, etc. Remember in looking at our tour, I have typed in a course from the bus entry – you may wish to alter it to your needs. Also, some works are occasionally out on “loan”, but most of the pieces should be on exhibit. Further, sometimes certain galleries may be closed during the week – a call ahead of time will clarify this. I hope the children are able to recall many of the stories and facts they learned along the way in their studies of these works. The Met is located on 5th Avenue at 80th Street in New York City, on the East side of the park – just down a bit from the Central Park Zoo.
A few Met facts:
1. The museum was founded in 1870
2. The building here opened in 1880
3. It has grown to 20 times its original size
4. There are 2,000,000 pieces in the collection
5. 4.5 million people visit each year – enough to go from the museum to the Pacific Ocean
6. 2,500 people work at the museum – curators study works of art and write books and make exhibits – conservators take care of the art and preserve it scientifically
7. The museum’s mascot is “William” the hippo, 1850BC Egyptian
